2009

wow such a looong time since the last time i updated anything! so here it is, bit by bit:

in the land of the euros:

at the london airport, after hours of flight, i needed some greens!

          2009 food in the air:

i was really impressed with this one! and the pie tasted great!

          2009 Thailand:

veg restaurants are everywhere in thailand, just ask and someone would know at least one.  yum!  here, sewing tables are reused as dining tables! i like :)

mobile veggies, now i just need a kitchen!

        April 09, 07

back to taipei. "shu shi" (vegetarian) signs everywhere! my type of place! yes! and so cheap!

             "shu shi" characters for vegetarian.

herbal soup with veg duck, sesame noodles and marinated glutinous rice with mushrooms and peanuts.

there we go, local stinky tofu topped with pickled cabbages, nothing beat this!

soy milk king, one of the most popular night breakfast place. a bowl of salty soy milk with fried dough fritters.

my fav tofu pudding dessert topped with tapioca balls and red beans with brown sugar syrup.

April 08, 07

made way by bus back to taipei. on the way a man offered us some "lian wu" - wax apple, one of the most popular taiwanese grown fruit.
           so juicy and yum!

        April 04, 07

now to the vegetarian haven of all - taiwan.

kitty here, kitty there, kitty everywhere! a veg kitty meal, yes!

little complications making the way to destinations, but thanks to the generosity and hospitality of taiwanese people, we were directed and fed...!
           i love taiwan!

           first destination: kenting.
           and lost in tai chung.

acquainted with some new taiwanese friends at the train station, who are willing to show the way! so took train with them to ping dong.

at train station, old man with traditional carrying basket, said to be almost extinct now.

invited by new friends to their house. on the way, so many vegetarian breakfast food stalls!

           01                                                                02                                                                                 03

01 purple rice balls with vegetarian tofu seaweed shreds.

02 "lun bing"- "soft cookie" wrapped with sesame seeds mixed fresh vegs. girl will be showing this one in cooking rendezvous for sure!

03 veg pastry with raisins, fresh lettuce, tomatoe and cream. mmm

April 03, 07

first visit today: meiji temple for a zen moment.

clean the hands, the mouth and heart before entering the place of peace.

second stop: hung out backstage of cirque du soleil in their japan tour, ya ya.

               beautiful outside.

              incredible backstage.

after performance, everyone wanted to go for dinner, i was straving! and knew there might not be any veg options for me at the restaurant.
as we passed by the street, thanks to the yummy crepe! (how can i ever turn down crepe) sweets for dinner tonight!

              crepe with chestnut cream filling.

and breakfast next morning hanging out with my  three new cirque du soleil performers brothers.

           April 02, 07

'tis the raining season! rained when we flew and rained when we got there. forgot your umbrella at home? no worries, there are an umbrella or two in every corner for use,
people just take them and leave them elsewhere for the next person to use.

how to solve water dripping from umbrella when you shop in stores? the umbrella plastic bags before you enter! not too environmental friendly but.

the land of packaging, pleases my graphic eyes! so many choices, too small of a stomach!

  shop for my favs.

these are my fav things! strawberry sandwich, onigiri, japanese green tea, green tea kit kat, mmm

veg challenge in japan where just about everything's got fish stock in it! but the almighty convenient stores never fail me!!

the safest to go with - the kombu seaweed onigiri triangle rice balls.

               accompanied with pickled veggies.

and greens with sesame sauce. all from the convenient store! good enough for me!

not easy to find veg places in japan unless you find specific veg cafes and restaurants, as for me i don't really mind convenient store foods.
many people do live off convenient store foods in japan, so fast and so... convenient!

         April 01, 07

wow, been a while since any new entries, because i want to bring you more exciting food journal from the east! yes, went to japan and taiwan to bring photos to entice
your visit there! first stop japan!

Day o1, the flight, leaving the Canadian soil. without reserving a veg meal in advance this is what i had. lots of tomatoe juice for the 13 hr flight.   thanks to the veg sandwich too!

         March 01, 07

last week, i was addicted to Rojak (means mixture in Malay), the exotic malaysian salad, which i have shown in cooking rendezvous. man, brings back memories from malaysia.
to match with theme of Chinese new year, i called this one: Rojak of Abundance.

second day of new year. nothing like a quick lunch - a bowl of hot noodle soup with veg fish balls in the beautiful winter day.
the happy voices of strangers greeting each other with good words of wishes for the new year were accompanied by my sound of slurped
noodles. :) wouldn't it be nice to hear good words from strangers everyday and everywhere keeping up with good spirit and energy...:)

             Feb 18, 07

wow, time flies, year of the pig here it is! every year there are displays of new year sweets and homemade rice cake on the kitchen and  living room table.
Happy New Year to all! Wish you prosperity and fortunes!

lotus root, coconut, carrot, and ginger, all covered with sweet sugar,

some chinese veg are actually cheaper than toronto!

          Sept 12, 06

girl@NY! what does girl do when she wants to have a cook meal on her first late night  in new york city? as  a vegetarian- give her the 24 hour store
"the rite aid", a kitchen, and the following ingredients, and the result: the urban veg improvisation

plaintain chips, cheese popcorn (when you can't get cheese anywhere), tomatoe soup, salt, black pepper, spaghetti..! suprisingly tasty!
as soon as the sun comes up she will seek out the veg yums around the city!

          Sept 10, 06
dessert northern chinese style - ba shi ping guo - crystal sugared apple. eating instruction - pulled a piece of fried and sugared apple,
dip in cold water, and taste!

Sept 05, 06
as we (girl + the machine) my musical group get ready for our CIUT radio interview, once again i spotted my dear vegetarian
hunky bassist fred who is socially conscious with cans of chickpeas in his car. chickpeas are a must for freddy's veg meal
on the go whether we are touring out of town, running to school from work, to music rehearsals. this company will be our
sponsor one day...! fred is currently working on documentary on the homeless and food security.

the king of fruits sweetened my lips...mmm toronto always amazes me. you can find allll the food you miss from asia. my all time favorite- Durian!
               nutritous and aromatic!

Aug 28, 06
for one week, i was addicted to this simple salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, olive oil and honey.  for breakfast today, salad, whole wheat buns
melted with soy cheese with a nice cup of fruity milk tea. the urban way to wake up... ahhh

                July 22, 06
i always appreciate restaurants with veg option. sweet lulu is a good place to hang out with veg and non veg friends. i love the
rice noodles with tasty peanut sauce!

July 7, 8, 06
the metro square night market, so taiwan, so familiar with fried greentea ice cream, the smelly tofu and company of good friends
including moulann, a fellow asian musician and a vegetarian as well!

fried ice cream                                                smelly tofu- famous taiwanese snack!            girl + moulann

                July 01, 06

there is something about the ice cream trucks, i get excited catching whenever i see one on the street. they remind me of
the tofu dessert vendors on the bike passing by in small neighborhoods in malaysia on a lazy afternoo or  the roasted
sweet potatoe trucks passing by in the small streets of japan in the winter time, drove by farmers bringing warmth to the city.
i love the little song they play as they pass by, they are all so creative in lyrics and melodies! ahhaha
the melodies gather the children and adults. i do wish to see a soy ice cream truck one day...!

                June 01, 06

one day i was given a flower from my spiritual Teacher, His Holiness said to me, "Have a blossoming life." i thank Him for
His encouragement and mercy, for it is HIm who guided me,  led me to peace and clarity. thank you Lao shi.

            May 24, 06

who would update their journal a month later? i would! :P anyways, while still in montreal, i was looking for a place to have breakfast.
came across a little cafe with bakery and sandwiches. unfortunately, my only vegetarian choice was a granola  yogurt with fruits.
there definitely need to have more vegetarian options in cafes and restaurants, a girl like me would tell hundreds others who are
vegetarian to go to these places if you provide a vegetarian friendly environment for people like me. think about it!

then for dinner,  i finally got the chance to visit a friend's vegetarian restaurant on st denis. this is montreal's first thai vegetarian restaurant.
so beautiful, graceful and the food is yummy. i would recommend chu chai (means victory in thai) for all of you vegetarians visiting montreal.

            May 2x, 06

yes! one year older now! blah another year of life lessons and accumulated wisdom from mistakes passed. this mark another new beginning.
in filial terms, one should express gratitute towards one's parents when birthday comes. in chinese culture, birthday is also called mu nan ri,
which translate to mother suffering day (the pain of giving birth) soooo, with that said, moms should be given flowers and sweets on
our birthday as a token of gratitute and love. every year my mother will make my b day cake. she is the sweetest on earth ;) thanks mom
this is what she made this year with almonds and mango:

                 May 1, 06

occationaly my dad likes to be in the kitchen, today he made a little salad:

                April 29, 06

went to sanko today and found my favorite natto (fermented soy bean) onigiri!! memoriessss from japan. some people think natto is smelly,
it is just like durian, a tropical fruit, or smelly tofu, or cheese, you either like it or can't stand the smell. in this case i love it! used to
eat this all the time!  the japanese in my opinion are germ freaks. everything feel safer when it is antibacterial. as the matter of fact
after i returned to canada, i realized i have been turned into one myself! the design of the onigiri package always amazes me:
the seaweed and rice is packaged separately, however you are able to wrap the rice and the seaweed together
when you want to eat without your dirty germ filled fingers touching the food!

               April 19, 06

Ok let's pretend i really wrote this on this day ok?! and we are good! ;P   as i was working on this site, my snack alarm sounded again,
don't want to go the the sweets route, so: the rice crackers wrapped with seaweed. yumm and not sweet!
i just go crazy once i start my sweets! so this saved me ;)  you can pretty much get this everywhere at any asian grocery market.

funny thing is this is a japanese snack, but it is made in thailand, how fusion is that?

              April 18, 06

The aroma of a cup of greentea and brown rice tea always brings back memories of japan. So soothing.

              April 17, 06

Rice noodles and chickpea curry for dinner entertained with movie Ray, is that fusion or what!?

              April 16, 06

Always nice to go to brunch/lunch with few friends. We went to Joy Bistro on queen st east, the decor was awsome with nice paintings
and victorian like setting. This one passed my veg test to eat in a non-veg place: grilled vegie sandwich with goat cheese with
peanut butter and strawberry jam which i stole from my friend's order. yes i like it sweet hahha, tasted awsome.

Doesn't it look beautiful? how can you not feel grateful when you see this?!

             April 14, 06

What to do when you are lazy and hungry? Yes, the lazy pizza dinner: Indian vegie stuffed paratha, some cheese,  ketchup and sprinkled
with dried parsley flakes and black pepper. Fast and yum ;)

             April 13, 06

Nothing like hypnotizing yourself into timeless awareness with watching the fabric of smoke formed by the burning
white mountain glacier incense. let go, let go of all the dramas and stress of life, for they are like the smoke,
impermanent and will all dissolve one day.

            April 11, 06

Creating this site as we speak! when i am creating, i either have to have ambient music or a little something something
for a snack during occational breaks from the computer screen. girl's favorite, the tofu jerky snack. eversince i introduced this to
my irish guitarist, he's been hunting them down whenever he sees an asian food market ;)

            April 10, 06

I love my berries and banana soya milk shake with almonds cereals in the morning. It is so refreshing!

At dinner: nothing like cooking and watching a korean horror movie at the same time! ( i don't suggest you do this unless
you are a pro like me! lol) and the food turned out pretty yummy!
